How I Built CANN’D Out of Frustration With Overpriced Matcha

I’m really happy you made it to this page — we need to talk.

Aren’t you tired of those €10 lattes at overpriced cafés?
They seem to go up every month. Don’t get me wrong, hanging out at a café is great, but for most of us, it’s become an expensive hobby. So why not just be your own barista and make your drink at home?
Wrong. Even that can cost up to €4 per cup — insanity, if you ask me.

This was a problem I faced as a student. I was one of the first in my friend group to get into matcha, and we used to meet for coffee at least five times a week.
5 × €6.50 = €32.50 a week on matcha. That was half my grocery money for the whole week.
And buying a €40 tin? Out of the question.
I knew there had to be a better way.

After graduating with honours from Hotel Management School Maastricht, I moved to Amsterdam — where café culture is basically religion. It inspired me even more to bring some change to the coffee and tea world.
That’s when I met Simon Squibb (or maybe he met me).

“What’s your dream?” he asked.

I suddenly felt like I was back in primary school giving my first presentation.
But yes — I had a dream: to start my own café and bring authenticity back to this industry.

The problem?
One, cafés are expensive to start.
Two, they tie you to one place.
Both things I didn’t have — and honestly, didn’t want.

Still, Simon believed in me and my dream. He invested in me with one condition:

stop dreaming and start building.

Six months later, here we are.
CANN’D was born — with one simple goal: to elevate your daily ritual without inflating the price tag.

It wasn’t easy.
15 farmers, 30+ tastings, 8 prototypes, and over 2,000 working hours later — the result is a product I’m genuinely proud of. A matcha that tastes incredible, but stays at a price point most people can actually afford.

Too many matcha brands overpromise and underdeliver.
They throw around complicated words to justify €40 tins, hoping you’ll buy the hype.
